Your Visit
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about visiting our practice.
What is an endocrinologist, and what do you treat?
An endocrinologist is a physician who specializes in hormones and metabolism. We diagnose and treat conditions including diabetes, thyroid disorders and thyroid nodules, osteoporosis and bone disease, adrenal and pituitary disorders, parathyroid disease, reproductive and menopausal hormone problems, metabolic and fatty liver disease, lipedema, and obesity.
Do I need a referral to be seen?
It depends on your insurance plan. Many PPO plans allow you to schedule directly, while HMO and IPA plans typically require a referral from your primary care physician. If you are unsure, call our office and we will help you determine what your plan requires.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Please bring your insurance card and photo ID, a list of your current medications and supplements, any relevant recent lab results or imaging, and the name of your referring or primary care physician. If you are coming for a thyroid nodule evaluation, bring any prior thyroid ultrasound or biopsy reports if available.
Our Services
Do you perform thyroid ultrasound and biopsies in the office?
Yes. Dr. Schneider is certified in neck ultrasound (ECNU) and performs diagnostic thyroid and neck ultrasound, as well as ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsies, on site.
Do you offer non-surgical treatment for thyroid nodules?
Yes. We are among the few practices in San Diego to offer minimally invasive, in-office radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and ethanol ablation for benign thyroid nodules — alternatives to thyroid surgery for appropriate candidates.
What diagnostic technology do you have on site?
Our offices offer in-office thyroid and neck ultrasound, liver elastography for fatty liver disease, bone density (DEXA) scanning for osteoporosis, retinal imaging for diabetic eye screening, and continuous glucose monitoring including the Eversense long-term implantable sensor.
Do you participate in clinical research?
Yes. Through our affiliated research center, EndoTrials, eligible patients can access clinical trials in diabetes, obesity, thyroid, and metabolic disease.
