Using dietary iodine, it produces T4 and T3 hormones that regulate metabolism throughout the body \u2014 influencing heart rate, body temperature, energy levels, weight, mood, fertility, bone density, and cognitive function.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<p>[vc_row full_width=\u201dstretch_row\u201d css=\u201d.vc_custom_th_s2{background-color: #f5f7f6 !important; padding-top: 24px !important; padding-bottom: 48px !important;}\u201d][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p class=\"de-section\" id=\"sec-hyperthyroidism\">Hyperthyroidism<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p class=\"de-q\">What is hyperthyroidism and what causes it?<\/p>\n<div class=\"de-a\">\n<p>Hyperthyroidism occurs when the thyroid produces more hormone than the body needs. The most common cause is <strong>Graves\u2019 disease<\/strong> \u2014 an autoimmune condition in which antibodies stimulate the thyroid to overproduce hormone. Other causes include toxic multinodular goiter and thyroiditis.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p class=\"de-q\">What are the symptoms of an overactive thyroid?<\/p>\n<div class=\"de-a\">\n<p><strong>Physical:<\/strong> Unintentional weight loss, rapid or irregular heartbeat, fine hand tremor, muscle weakness, heat intolerance, sweating, fatigue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mood and cognitive:<\/strong> Anxiety, irritability, difficulty concentrating, insomnia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other:<\/strong> Goiter, thinning hair, changes in menstrual cycle. Graves\u2019 disease can cause proptosis (eye protrusion).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p class=\"de-q\">How is hyperthyroidism treated?<\/p>\n<div class=\"de-a\">\n<p class=\"de-drug-name\">Antithyroid Medications Methimazole \u00b7 Propylthiouracil (PTU)<\/p>\n<p class=\"de-drug-desc\">Block thyroid hormone synthesis. Effective in 40\u201350% of Graves\u2019 patients long-term.<\/p>\n<p class=\"de-drug-name\">Radioactive Iodine (RAI)<\/p>\n<p class=\"de-drug-desc\">Destroys thyroid tissue. Highly effective. Results in hypothyroidism in most patients, requiring lifelong levothyroxine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"de-drug-name\">Surgery (Thyroidectomy)<\/p>\n<p class=\"de-drug-desc\">Rapid and definitive. Preferred when the thyroid is very large, when suspicious nodules are present, or when the patient prefers surgery.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<p>[vc_row full_width=\u201dstretch_row\u201d css=\u201d.vc_custom_th_s3{background-color: #ffffff !important; padding-top: 24px !important; padding-bottom: 48px !important;}\u201d][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p class=\"de-section\" id=\"sec-hypothyroidism\">Hypothyroidism<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p class=\"de-q\">What is hypothyroidism and what causes it?<\/p>\n<div class=\"de-a\">\n<p>Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid produces insufficient hormone. The most common cause is <strong>Hashimoto\u2019s thyroiditis<\/strong> \u2014 an autoimmune condition in which the immune system gradually destroys thyroid tissue. Other causes include previous RAI treatment, thyroid surgery, and certain medications.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p class=\"de-q\">What are the symptoms of an underactive thyroid?<\/p>\n<div class=\"de-a\">\n<p><strong>Physical:<\/strong> Fatigue, weight gain, feeling cold, dry skin and hair, hair loss, constipation, slowed heart rate.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cognitive and mood:<\/strong> Depression, poor memory, \u201cbrain fog.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other:<\/strong> Irregular or heavy menstrual periods, fertility difficulties, muscle aches, elevated cholesterol.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p class=\"de-q\">How is hypothyroidism treated?<\/p>\n<div class=\"de-a\">\n<p>The standard treatment is daily oral <strong>levothyroxine<\/strong> (synthetic T4). Dosing is individualized \u2014 there is no formula. Most patients notice improvement within two weeks, though full symptom resolution may take 2\u20133 months.<\/p>\n<div class=\"de-callout\">Levothyroxine is best taken on an empty stomach, 30\u201360 minutes before eating. Calcium, iron, and antacids all interfere with absorption.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p class=\"de-q\">What about T3 or natural thyroid extracts?<\/p>\n<div class=\"de-a\">\n<p>A subset of patients may genuinely benefit from T3 addition or natural desiccated thyroid (NDT, e.g., Armour Thyroid). We prescribe NDT when clinically appropriate.<\/p>\n<div class=\"de-callout\">We do not dismiss a patient\u2019s symptoms because their TSH is \u201cnormal.\u201d We investigate thoroughly.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<p>[vc_row full_width=\u201dstretch_row\u201d css=\u201d.vc_custom_th_s4{background-color: #f5f7f6 !important; padding-top: 24px !important; padding-bottom: 64px !important;}\u201d][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p class=\"de-section\" id=\"sec-thyroid-nodules-and-cancer\">Thyroid Nodules & Cancer<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p class=\"de-q\">I have a thyroid nodule. Should I be worried?<\/p>\n<div class=\"de-a\">\n<p>Almost certainly not \u2014 but it warrants proper evaluation. Up to 75% of the population will have a nodule detected on imaging, and the vast majority are entirely benign. The purpose of evaluation is to identify the small minority that harbor cancer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p class=\"de-q\">How is a thyroid nodule evaluated?<\/p>\n<div class=\"de-a\">\n<p><strong>Thyroid Ultrasound:<\/strong> The essential first step. We perform high-resolution ultrasound in-office.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fine-Needle Aspiration (FNA) Biopsy:<\/strong> For nodules meeting size and sonographic criteria. Performed in-office with ultrasound guidance. Results classified using the Bethesda system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Molecular Testing:<\/strong> For indeterminate biopsies, molecular markers (ThyroSeq, Afirma) can further stratify cancer risk.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p class=\"de-q\">What is Thyroid Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)?<\/p>\n<div class=\"de-a\">\n<p>RFA is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure that shrinks benign nodules using heat energy delivered through a small electrode under ultrasound guidance. No incision, no general anesthesia, no hypothyroidism in most cases.<\/p>\n<div class=\"de-callout\">We offer thyroid RFA in-office for appropriate benign nodules causing compressive symptoms or cosmetic concerns.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p class=\"de-q\">What should I know if I have been diagnosed with thyroid cancer?<\/p>\n<div class=\"de-a\">\n<p>A thyroid cancer diagnosis is understandably frightening \u2014 but the great majority carry an excellent prognosis. <strong>Papillary thyroid cancer<\/strong> (~85%) has a 10-year survival rate exceeding 95%.
